Comfortable and functional layout Inside, the Contest 31 offers a surprisingly spacious and practical layout. The 1.90-metre headroom ensures a pleasant stay on board, even for longer periods. There are five fixed berths, divided between the saloon and the forecabin, making the vessel suitable for families or small groups. The dinette is centrally located and offers ample seating, while the galley is equipped with a cooker and refrigerator—ideal for multi-day trips. A manual toilet is fitted, with direct discharge to open water.
The freshwater tank has a capacity of 240 litres, and the holding tank offers 100 litres, contributing to comfort and autonomy during longer voyages. Although the vessel does not have a built-in heating system, the interior is well insulated and provides shelter from the elements.
Sailing performance and rig The Contest 31 is equipped with an aluminium mast and a complete sail plan consisting of a mainsail, genoa, jib and storm jib. The genoa is fitted with a furling system, simplifying sailing in changing conditions. Lazy jacks and halyards led to the mast make hoisting and lowering sails efficient. The sails are in functional condition and suitable for both recreational and sporty use.
Steering is via a wheel in the cockpit, with a single rudder. The boat is easy to handle, even solo or with a small crew. The autopilot adds comfort during longer passages. The Contest 31 has proven itself on both inland waters and at sea, with previous voyages to, among others, England, France, Norway and even Canada.
Engine and electrical system The boat is fitted with a Yanmar 20GM inboard diesel engine from 2006, producing 20 hp. The engine has approximately 500 running hours and is electrically started. With a cruising speed of 10 km/h and a top speed of 15 km/h, the engine provides sufficient power for harbour manoeuvres and motor-sailing. Fuel consumption is around 1.2 litres per hour, with a tank capacity of 80 litres.
The electrical installation is extensive and includes shore power, a battery charger, alternator, inverter, voltmeter and a solar panel. Two batteries supply the onboard system with power, with sufficient capacity for navigation, lighting and communication equipment. The dual fuse panels ensure clear and safe power distribution.
Navigation and safety The navigation equipment is modern and functional, including AIS, GPS, depth sounder, log/speedometer, wind meter, compass and VHF radio. Navigation is via Wi‑Fi, enabling use of a tablet, smartphone or laptop. The fixed microphone in the cabin and handheld microphone in the cockpit ensure good communication on the water. Navigation lights, a deck light and interior lighting are present.
In terms of safety, the boat is equipped with a self-draining cockpit, lifebuoy with flare, manual bilge pump and various life jackets. An electric anchor windlass with chain and line makes anchoring easy and safe.
Exterior equipment and appearance The exterior equipment of the Contest 31 includes a sprayhood, cockpit tent, deck covers, exterior deck cushions, swim ladder, fenders and lines. The guardrails provide extra safety on deck. The boat regularly attracts attention in marinas thanks to its classic lines and authentic appearance. The polyester hull is solidly built and reflects the quality of Dutch yacht building from the 1970s.
Experience and possibilities This Contest 31 is a sailing yacht with a rich history and proven seaworthiness. The current owner has owned the vessel since 2016 and has made various trips with it, including to England and France. The previous owner sailed it to Canada and Norway. The boat is suitable for day trips, weekend getaways and longer holidays, and offers plenty of opportunities for adventurous sailors looking for a characterful vessel with potential.
With its solid construction, functional equipment and comfortable sailing characteristics, this Contest 31 is an attractive choice for sailing enthusiasts who value classic style and practical usability.
