One employee was treated in hospital for suspected smoke inhalation, but has already been discharged. One firefighter was injured. According to shipyard spokesman Marcus Schlichting, the fire with heavy smoke development is believed to have started at around 9.00 a.m. on a machine in the pre-production area, where hulls and decks are prepared for final assembly. The entire factory was evacuated immediately. Schlichting: "Thanks to the prudent and quick actions of the workforce and the professional approach of the emergency and rescue services of the neighbouring fire brigades, the operation was brought to an end at around 11 a.m.". How the incident came about is now being investigated."
Production will resume in the unaffected areas once the fire brigade has given the go-ahead. The damage to the affected machine should now be repaired as quickly as possible. According to the shipyard, it is not yet possible to say whether the damage will delay deliveries.
