What are the Germans' favourite yacht brands, which brands do they have themselves, how much money are they prepared to spend? The answers to these and many more questions are provided by the large reader survey

Sailors continue to spend a lot of money on their hobby. In view of all the current crises - whether wars, inflation or floods - this is perhaps the most remarkable result of our latest reader survey. More than 7,000 of you took part in the autumn. That is far more than would be necessary to derive a representative picture from the responses.

For example, which boats are at the top of the list of favourites among long-standing or future owners. And which sizes are most in demand. The figures on this page provide information on this and more.

The reader survey was carried out by the market research institute Market Research from Neuhausen near Stuttgart. Detailed results are now available at: DK-MEDIASALES.DE/WATERSPORTS-MARKET-STUDY

These shipyards stand for high quality

At the top, there have only been a few minor shifts compared to 2021 (values in brackets). In the lower half, however, Oyster, Luffe and Contest are among the yards that did not make it into the top ten two years ago.

How much money is spent?

Steep upward trend: Development of the average amounts that prospective buyers were willing to spend in the past decades or are currently willing to spend

New boats

59 per cent of YACHT readers want their next new boat to cost over 250,000 euros. Only just under ten per cent are satisfied with a new boat for less than 50,000 euros.Photo: YACHT59 per cent of YACHT readers want their next new boat to cost over 250,000 euros. Used boats

Almost half of the survey participants who want to buy a second-hand boat are willing to spend up to a maximum of 50,000 euros. The most popular boat size

Whether new or second-hand, the majority of both buyer groups agree on the size of the boat

  • 40 % of new and used boat buyers are looking for ten to twelve metre yachts
  • 33 % of new boat buyers are interested in boats between twelve and 15 metres in length
  • 36 % of second-hand buyers are looking for models from 7.50 to ten metres

How important is sustainability?

The topic of sustainability is moving further into focus. From the sailors' point of view, the boating industry is called upon to act

  • 75 % of YACHT readers think that sustainability should be a matter of course
  • 56 % demand that products in the water sports sector should be recyclable
  • 54 % would be prepared to pay more for an environmentally friendly product
