TestHanse 510 - bigger, more space and more volume

Can the yacht builders in Greifswald build on the brilliant success of the smaller 460s with the new Hanse 510? Find out in the YACHT exclusive test

In this article:

Actually, the statements in the Test report on the Hanse 460 This is also largely transferred to the new Hanse 510 model. According to the motto: If you know one, you know them both. And indeed, the larger vessel from Hanseyachts' still young cruising generation that has now been presented is very similar to its smaller and extremely successful sister, not only visually but also conceptually.

Nevertheless, there are of course differences. Compared to the 460, the Hanse 510 is almost 1.40 metres longer, but only twelve centimetres wider. This means that the lines of the design from the new collaboration between Hanseyachts and Studio Berret-Racoupeau in France are significantly more elongated. The dimensions are thus very deliberately intended to remain within a maximum projection of five metres, which is a particular issue in the Mediterranean when it comes to occupying harbour space.

The shipyard uses the extra hull length primarily to create a garage for the dinghy in the stern - that takes up space. And it is also the most significant differentiation between the two types from Hanse's new model generation.

Tender garage requires deep bathing platform

A dinghy measuring 2.40 metres in length can be stored transversely in the stern garage. Hanse offers an inflatable boat for this purpose, in which the stern section including outboard motor can be easily folded in. The construction number one is also equipped with the optional Smart Tender System developed by Hanse, with which the dinghy can be swivelled out over the bathing platform via a crane jib very easily and without increased effort, allowing it to be effortlessly lowered in and out of the water. All in all, this system worked extremely well in the test.

However, as is often the case with boats with a dinghy garage, the stern platform must be very low for this. In the case of the Hanse 510, the large bathing platform even rests directly on the surface of the water when open. This is perfect for swimming in a calm bay. However, the bathing platform must remain closed when the swell is higher at the anchorage. If the waves from below crash too hard against the mighty plate, the structures and folding mechanisms could quickly be damaged. The splashing at the stern is also annoying in the long run.

There are already 37 orders for the new 510. Considerable demand for a ship of this size

Smooth-running single rudder with noticeable feedback

In terms of sailing performance and characteristics, the Hanse 510 is in no way inferior to the smaller 460 - quite the opposite. In the test off Barcelona in Spain in around ten knots of wind, the larger boat also impressed with very lively and agile movements. Despite the generous width at the stern, the design manages with just one rudder blade. However, due to the dinghy garage in the stern, this is significantly wider and also built more vertically under the hull than on its smaller sister. This also seems to have an effect on the steering behaviour. The helmsman on the 510 is pleased with the smooth and very balanced steering with pleasantly perceptible feedback. In the YACHT test of the 460, the behaviour was found to be somewhat more sluggish in comparison, albeit with significantly more wind.

At 3 Beaufort, the new Hanse manages a good six knots upwind with the standard self-tacking jib, the tacking angle is around 90 degrees. From a wind angle of around 70 degrees, a furling reacher, a large and widely overlapping genoa, provides a considerable increase in performance. The log quickly rises to 8.0 knots at half wind. The jib and reacher furled on their own stays are part of the rig concept of the new Hanse generation and cover a wide range of uses, even without the need for time-consuming sail changes on the foredeck. Sailors sailing with a small crew or single-handed will appreciate this flexibility, especially because they don't have to leave the helm for manoeuvres. Sporty sailors with a crew can further increase the performance potential with either a Code Zero or a gennaker. These additional sails can then be used at the front of the permanently attached bowsprit.

High loads on the winches, tight line guidance

The routing of the sheets, halyards and trim lines is also identical on the two new Hanse models. This means that everything is positioned aft on two winches that are relatively close together, laterally in front of the helm stations and within easy reach of the helmsman. However, it seems advisable to equip at least one of the two winches on each side of the large boat with additional electric drives. In particular, the loads on the mainsheet are extremely high due to the unusually high forward position of the masthead above the companionway. Despite the good basic equipment with 50 mm winches from Lewmar, tightening the mainsheet with the crank handle is therefore exhausting even in light winds.

However, the crowded arrangement of the line guides and the very short distances from the halyard stoppers to the winches require the helmsman to be careful when handling the many lines. A wuhling is quickly produced here. Large halyard swivels help to keep things tidy. The helmsman sits elevated at the side with some distance to the running deck and is therefore dry when the water comes over. However, he only has a little space behind the steering columns if, as on the test boat, the folding seats are attached at the stern. However, they are part of the extra equipment.

Huge cockpit with U-shaped seating area or large sun loungers

The cockpit is simply huge. Two large seating areas are arranged in an L-shape or, optionally with additional stools, in a U-shape around two tables. This leaves the passage through the cockpit free and unobstructed. The tables can also be lowered on request. With inlay cushions, two spacious sunbeds can be installed that are 2.34 metres long and 1.20 metres wide. However, the tables also block access to the storage compartments in the seat bays. The storage compartments can only be accessed by contortions and the lids can only be opened halfway. A large storage space for the life raft is built into the floor just behind the companionway and is easily accessible.

As an alternative to the conventional cockpit design, customers can also request a targa bar above the cockpit and combine it with a fixed hardtop as sun and weather protection. However, because the main boom has to rise sharply towards the rear and is no longer accessible, this version is only available in combination with the optional furling mast.

Owner layout or charter extension

It is also clear from the layout that Hanse and the designers at Berret-Racoupeau essentially developed the two models 510 and 460 at the same time and together. It is the same layout and the same variants that are also available for the new large boat. The basic version is the owner's boat with three cabins and three bathrooms. An extension with a split forecastle and a total of four double cabins and four heads is ideal for yacht charter. Another extension version even provides for five cabins, but only with three heads. In contrast to the Hanse 460, the larger 510 can also be fitted with a cabin for the skipper in the forepeak instead of the large and very spacious sail load.

Good space utilisation and an impeccable finish below deck. The look and feel are right, as is the quality

The increase in hull volume compared to the 460 is obvious below deck. The height in particular creates an impressive feeling of space. With the exception of the aft cabins, the headroom in all living areas is well over two metres, even in the heads, where many people find it difficult or even impossible to reach the hatches in the roof for ventilation. In some cases, it is necessary to use the toilet as a stool.

Massive furniture body dominates the living room

The striking component below deck is the central body, which is built into the saloon as a room divider between the seating area and the galley installed lengthways at the side. The large box is a blessing at sea and especially when heeling, because you can wedge yourself into the passageway to work in the galley and thus have a secure footing. And it also serves as a good place to hold on to on the way through the ship. On the other hand, the mighty piece of furniture is visually very dominant. As a result, the interior design appears convoluted and obstructed. Hanse wants to consider perhaps changing the design of the furniture again or perhaps developing alternatives.

The well-equipped basic version of the Hanse 510 costs 535,380 euros ex shipyard. In comparison, the smaller Hanse 460 currently has a price tag of 339,030 euros. The difference between the two models is therefore almost 200,000 euros. That's a lot of money for what is essentially a slightly longer boat with the advantage of a dinghy garage in the stern, as well as a little more volume and a little more comfort below deck. The good thing is that the customer is essentially offered the same boat in two sizes and versions and can therefore decide according to their wishes or needs.

YACHT review Hanse 510

The second boat from the new co-operation between Hanseyachts and Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design also shows convincing performance under sail despite its relatively high weight and very large hull volume. This benefits the interior in particular.
