At around 3.15 p.m., the tower at Heringsdorf airfield alerted the Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre (MRCC) Bremen: After landing on the Szczecin Lagoon, a seaplane with two men from North Rhine-Westphalia on board was unable to take off due to an electrical failure. In addition, the short waves on the lagoon had apparently already washed some water into the interior of the aircraft. At the time, the plane was about four and a half nautical miles south of Wapnica in the Polish part of the Szczecin Lagoon, the Great Lagoon.
The See rescue control centre then sent the volunteer rescuers from the Ueckermünde station into action. They rushed to the drifting seaplane with two boats. On site, the crew of the "Eva Ahrens-Thies" established a line connection to the distressed vessel. They then towed the aircraft safely to Wapnica in Poland, which was also unusual for the rescuers.
