Olympic 49er champion and world champion Dylan Fletcher-Scott has secured another title. The Briton deservedly crowned himself the new world champion at this year's Moth World Championship in Buenos Aires (Argentina). He beat the Argentinian Massimo Contessi by a ten-point margin. Simone Salva from Italy completed the podium of the high-calibre classification. There was also a German runner-up, who is unlikely to be the loudest to claim the title.
In the women's event, US Olympian (2016, 49erFX) Helena Scutt came top of the Moth class (20th overall). Italian Francesco Bruni won the last two races and took the title of Master World Champion (6th place overall). The 49-year-old is one of the most successful Italian sailors ever. In addition to several world championship titles and three Olympic titles, he is currently in his fifth America's Cup campaign with the Luna Rossa team.
The conditions off Buenos Aires during the World Championship from 29 November to 4 December were not always easy for the extreme foilers. Participants and organisers struggled with both too little and too much wind. However, after limited racing on the first three days, the conditions improved so that the 38 participants from nine countries were finally able to complete 13 races.
Compared to the previous year, there was a much smaller field at the start. In 2021, around 140 Moths had gathered at the foiling dream spot of Lake Garda. The title was won by the Australian perennial favourite, America's Cup winner and Laser Olympic champion Tom Slingsby with an incredible 13 wins in 14 races. Alongside him, several other top athletes did not make the long journey and the high logistical effort this year. At the previous World Championship, 15 German Moths were among the participants, this year only three.
The best of the small fleet was Kai Adolph in 16th place, directly followed by Maximilan Mäge. The trio from the Bavarian Yacht Club was completed by Franziska Mäge in 23rd place. After becoming world champion off Perth in 2019, she made it onto the podium once again (2nd place women). However, there were only three women in the field.
