When going to the toilet in the dark, whether at anchor or when travelling at night, the normal light is often dazzling. However, a light source with less power is not a solution either; sometimes bright lighting and a clear view are an advantage. That's why we fitted a special toilet light: what initially looked like a joke turned out to be a practical addition to everyday life on board. The small light is attached to the toilet bowl from the outside. The LED is attached to a movable arm that can be bent to fit the rim of the bowl and holds the small box in place. The light source shines into the bowl. The highlight, however, is a motion sensor that switches the light on automatically. The light colour can also be freely selected. The gadget is available online for little money.

If the boat bucks a little in the wave, it can become uncomfortable on the toilet. A common problem is that you and your toilet seat slip a little to the leeward side, which can damage the plastic hinges of the toilet seat. There is a simple solution to avoid this in future. In addition to the hinges, we have created a fixation for the seat with two stainless steel brackets. The brackets support them on the side of the ceramic bowl and prevent the hinges from being subjected to excessive torque when they are in position.

People often forget to switch off the faeces tank display after reading it - this puts a strain on the on-board battery. Here is the solution: a small magnet is glued into a countersunk hole on the top of the toilet lid. A proximity switch (reed contact) is mounted where the lid strikes when it is opened. This switches the display on and off automatically.

We sail from March to November as long as we can - it can be really cold on board. But running the diesel heater with a fan or a fan heater at night is too loud for me. To make going into the bathroom pleasant, I have installed an electric towel radiator. This has 300 watts and is regulated by the thermostat supplied. I bought the heat from the socket for 65 euros from a specialist retailer.
