Germany's leading multi-channel sports platform SPORT1 will broadcast the sailing races of the Kiel Week closely this year. The programme includes two hours of live coverage every day in the early afternoon and a half-hour highlights magazine in the evening. There are also plans to cover the SPORT1 apps and social media channels up close from the Kiel Fjord. The programmes and reports will be presented exclusively by Audi, which is a premium and mobility partner of Kieler Woche.
For the first time, the most important of around 400 planned races in the Olympic disciplines and international boat classes will be broadcast over several hours on free-to-air television. "After we founded Kieler-Woche-TV more than ten years ago to bring sailing closer to a broad audience, the new partnership with SPORT1 is an absolute highlight in the further development of this format," says Tim Häuslein, project manager at Point of Sailing, the marketing agency of the Kieler Yacht-Club.
SPORT1 editor-in-chief Pit Gottschalk is also looking forward to the upcoming highlight in the sailing calendar: "Kieler Woche is the biggest sailing event in the world: with an impressive tradition and significance that goes beyond the sport." With the planned coverage, the aim is to bring viewers throughout Germany "closer to the fascination of Kiel Week with great images and a passion for sailing".
After preliminary reports on Friday, the first live broadcast will start on Saturday 17 June at 2 pm with races on the media track. With a few exceptions, races will be shown live on television at this time throughout the week. Only on the following Sunday will the programme start one hour earlier.
In the evening, the highlights of the day will almost always be shown at 7 pm. A 30-minute summary with the best scenes, pictures and interviews is planned. Only on the first Sunday (18 June) will the magazine start at 11 pm, on the second Saturday (24 June) at 10 pm.
The world's biggest sailing event will take place on the Kiel Fjord from 17 to 25 June. YACHT is also playing an important role this year as a new media partner and will be on site with its own digital team to offer its own content in addition to the wide range of Kieler Woche events.
As a World Cup regatta, Kiel Week promises a top sporting level in the pre-Olympic year 2023. Organisation manager Ramhorst and his regatta directors Fabian Bach (triangular courses) and Eckart Reinke are expecting more than 1,500 boats from around 50 nations, from kitefoilers to ocean-going yachts. They will be sailing for victory on nine regatta courses. After the eel regatta with 100 or more sea-going yachts at the start in Eckernförde, this time all ten Olympic disciplines will start in the first part off Schilksee and Stein am Ostufer (Formula Kite). They will also be competing for the decisive points in the final event of the 2023 Sailing World Cup, which will culminate in the medal races on the Wednesday of Kiel Week. Eleven international boat classes and the yacht races for the Kiel Cup, the Silver Ribbon and the Senate Prize are also on the programme.
