In past folding bike tests, Brompton has always received excellent ratings for its small pack size and riding characteristics. Now the British manufacturer is launching a new variant with the G Line.

New are the larger 20-inch Schwalbe G-One wheels, which are wider than standard. This should also make it possible to ride comfortably on poorer routes away from tarmac paths. The G Line is available in three frame sizes and with optional electric drive. The electric motor is located in the rear wheel hub and not at the front as in the classic Brompton. The manufacturer describes the new model as the biggest new development in 50 years. The first Brompton was introduced half a century ago and is still available today, scoring particularly highly with its very small pack size.

Three sizes of Brompton for the first time

The folding mechanism of the new G Line is also typical of Brompton, and the frame shape also follows the familiar lines. However, with the sizes Small, Medium and Large, there are now three sizes. The manufacturer specifies three handlebar heights for comparison: Small is 152 to 168 centimetres high, Medium 168 to 183 and Large 183 to 198.

Two different drives

A distinction is also made between 8-speed and 4-speed models. This means that the variant with 8-speed hub gears without e-drive (>> e.g. available at Fahrrad XXL) and the Electric G Line with four gears. The latter is driven by an electric motor in the hub with 250 watts of power. The new rear-wheel drive is said to offer advantages. In the last YACHT test, the electrically driven front wheel of the Brompton slipped quickly, especially on hills. The G Line 8-Speed weighs 13.9 kilograms in size Small, but without extras such as mudguards and pannier rack. The G Line 4-Speed weighs 16.1 kilograms with pannier rack and mudguards but without battery. With battery 19.5.

Larger tyres on the new Bromton

In addition to the larger frame, the 20-inch tyres are intended to contribute in particular to the improved riding comfort of the on-board bike. Here, too, there is a choice between two variants: Schwalbe puncture-proof tyres specially developed for the G Line. These are recommended by the manufacturer for off-road riding. On flat cycle paths, the tyres from Continental should score points. The hydraulic disc brakes are also a new feature. Brompton has never had these before. They should provide reliable braking power even on poor surfaces.

In addition to wider handlebars, ergonomic grips and wide but removable pedals, the saddle is also a new development. With a carbon fibre base, it is designed to minimise vibrations and offer exceptional comfort.

Wide range of Brompton accessories

Brompton also has specific accessories in its programme for the G Line. For example, the front carrier block is designed to transfer the weight of the pannier and battery bag to the frame rather than the handlebars. This results in more stable cornering behaviour even with a lot of luggage. Also available are covers for the folded bike, water bottle and smartphone holders, a tool kit, lights, mudguards and pannier racks.

The price for the Brompton G Line starts at 2849 euros for the G Line 8-Speed Small without pannier rack and mudguards. Depending on size, equipment and with electric drive, the price ranges up to 3999 euros for the Electric G Line 4-Speed. The new models will be available from accredited Brompton dealers from October.
