Liontron is presenting waterproof lithium on-board batteries as a "world premiere" at the boot trade fair in Düsseldorf (21-29 January, Hall 10, Stand C 49). They are available with 12.8 or 25.6 volts and capacities of 55, 100, 150 or 200 ampere hours, based on lithium iron phosphate technology

Compared to a lead-acid battery with the same number of ampere hours, they offer a significantly lower weight with a constant discharge voltage and double the capacity, as they are not damaged by deep discharge, according to the manufacturer. It promises "over 3,000 charging and discharging cycles with faster charging times". A battery management system provides information via Bluetooth about the charge status of the complete battery set with up to four batteries connected in series. The current charge and discharge are also displayed. This saves the skipper the need for a battery monitor and is "much more accurate", according to Liontron.

The battery also protects against short circuits, reverse polarity, overvoltage and excessive temperatures. It is watertight to a depth of five metres and condensation moisture inside is conducted to the outside via a valve with a special membrane. The Liontron Marine batteries are compatible with all existing lead battery technologies without having to change the existing charging and discharging structure.

Battery housing can be opened for maintenance

Thanks to its modular design, the battery should also be able to be opened, checked and repaired quickly. The housing is not glued and can be opened by loosening four screws; the individual components such as the lithium cells, the battery management system or the Bluetooth module are not soldered but screwed together. Liontron refers to this as the "3 x 5 minute" concept: this makes it possible to open each battery within five minutes and test it for faults. Each component can be replaced in a further five minutes. And after another five minutes, the battery can be reassembled and ready for use. "Lithium batteries are no longer disposable products, but a sustainable solution," says Liontron, which received the "European Innovation Award" in the "Sustainability & Environment" category.

In contrast to other lithium technologies, neither cobalt, nickel, cadmium nor other environmentally harmful heavy metals are used in cell production. "All metals used are up to 100 per cent recyclable and no toxic heavy metals are emitted into the environment," promises Liontron.

All models are also available as an "Arctic" version with integrated cell heating. The battery can then also be charged in an environment with sub-zero temperatures. The German manufacturer offers a five-year warranty and a ten-year spare parts service. The company employs 120 people and is based in the Lower Rhine region. The group of companies also includes GreenAkku, a provider of alternative energy solutions, and the selfPV brand, which stands for plug-in balcony solar systems.
