Light, flat, slim, somewhat retro: the Tide 36 combines various style elements

Built by MFH in Emden, the Von-Ahlen design combines sleek lines, tiller, closed yacht stern, oval windows and modern appendages to create a powerful and rare mix in a performance cruiser

Construction number one was completed at Janssen & Renkhoff in Kappeln and has already been available to YACHT for a test. MFH stands for Maritime fibre composite technology Haring a company that already presented a slim, stylish Wadden cruiser in 2012 with the Tide 34. The new performance cruiser is also very slim, but is equipped with a welded hollow stainless steel fixed keel and lead bomb. Retrospective elements such as a closed yacht stern, oval windows and low hull volume instead of maximum enclosed space and low freeboard characterise the ship, as do tiller steering and a dog bunk instead of an aft cabin.

Strong performance in the test

The prototype of the unique performance cruiser was created in cooperation with the Kappeln shipyard Janssen & Renkhoff. The high-quality built boat with an empty weight of less than four tonnes sails agilely, fast and high, as the YACHT test showed. The boat also coped well with gusts of 16 knots of apparent wind and did not tend to lose control even when heeled. The rudder pressure is appropriate for the conditions and helps to find and hold the track well upwind.

Tide 36: Performance cruiser can also be pretty

The pleasantly large cockpit offers enough space for three people, even when manoeuvring, and the boat is not designed for more with three berths in the foredeck and dog bunk. With an unladen weight of less than four tonnes and a generously dimensioned sail area, the Tide 36 has a high sail carrying capacity of 4.65, which is usually reserved for high-performance yachts. And this even with the self-tacking jib. A short overlapping genoa is also possible and increases the sail carrying capacity to 4.85. The hollow stainless steel keel with lead bomb also contributes to the high sailing performance, while the good steering characteristics are helped by the fairly large rudder. This proved to be sub-optimal on the construction number 1; it tended to vibrate at medium speeds, which is changed by a narrower aft edge.

A little retro below deck too

Overall, the interior is quite tight and flat. Designer Marc-Oliver von Ahlen: "Instead of maximising the converted space, the boat scores with particularly high-quality fittings." Indeed, the performance cruiser has a large toilet and a porcelain washbasin in the wet room, which also offers shower facilities. The high-quality lights from Prebit can be dimmed. The surfaces are natural and cream-coloured. And the shipyard has really let off steam with the keel bolts: the large stainless steel cap nuts are highly polished and also hold the table. The high quality standards continue even behind the scenes: the floor cradles are made of solid wood and are a feast for the eyes; Plexiglas floor boards and bilge lighting should actually be installed. The high quality standards continue. The perfectly crafted fittings with clean edges, sealed surfaces and attractive finishes are just as impressive as the high-quality fittings, which are one size larger and should therefore be more durable and smooth-running.
