YYachts is expanding the Y8 series with a custom version. The Greifswald shipyard customised the layout and sail plan with designer Javier Jaudenes

A former regatta sailor brought about some changes for Javier Jaudenes and Michael Schmidt. The Mallorcan designer has now developed a sporty but also very comfortable carbon yacht for the occasional long distance. The backstay was removed so that a mainsail with a flared top could be used and so that the 37-tonner could start quickly even in light winds.

The tender garage will be fitted with a new crane system and the saloon can be divided below deck. The dining area is then added to the master suite and the table is used as a desk. There is storage space for crockery on one side and for work documents on the other. Another adjustment concerns the crew areas and galley, which are now more strictly separated aft from the two guest cabins in front.

The Y8 is the perfect size"

"The Y8 is the perfect size for me, it's no coincidence that I once owned one myself," reports YYachts founder Michael Schmidt, "with the Y8 Custom we can now cater for every owner's taste."

The first Y8 is almost finished

YYachts was founded in 2015 when Michael Schmidt wanted to build his own 24-metre sloop. Michael Schmidt Yachtbau became a shipyard that has managed to deliver 41 yachts with lengths between 70 and 90 feet in eight years. Figures that competitors from Finland, Italy and South Africa grudgingly take note of.

YYachts now has around 40 employees and, in addition to its headquarters in Greifswald, there is also a branch office in Mallorca. "Our design office is located in Palma and is managed by Francesca Modica," explains Head of Marketing Stefan Schöler. Modica was responsible for the interior design of the completely redeveloped Y8, while yacht designer Javier Jaudenes, who also lives in Palma, created the hull lines and exterior styling. Construction number one of the current Y8 is currently at an advanced stage.
