Tough, tougher, Cape Horn: six sailors will be inducted into the Cape Horn Hall of Fame in 2024. Who is nominated and how you can take part

It is considered the Everest for ocean sailors - the passage of Cape Horn. Anyone who passes this inhospitable end of South America can rightly claim to have achieved something great in terms of sailing. Sailors in England and Spain are currently returning from circumnavigations in the Golden Globe Race and the Global Solo Challenge, the highlight of which is always the passage of Cape Horn. It is always duly celebrated anew.

Since its foundation three years ago, the International Association of Cape Horners has also honoured this achievement by presenting the Cape Horn Hall of Fame Award to new ocean-going sailors who have passed the Cape every year - and this year is no exception. What is particularly exciting is that anyone can take part and submit nominations for the award until 30 April 2024.

Which sailors have already been nominated

Some big names are already on the shortlist for the 2024 award, including Kirsten Neuschäfer, the winner of the 2023 Golden Globe Race and the first woman to win a regatta around the world. But also the Frenchmen Loïck Peyron and his brother Bruno, the Russian adventurer Fyodor Konyukhov, the late Rear Admiral Hugo Bruna Greene, who sailed around Cape Horn four times as captain of the Chilean square-rigged training ship "Esmeralda", the Whitbread/Volvo racing veterans Andrew Cape, Roger Nilsen and Stuart Bannatyne, the five-time British circumnavigator Mike Golding, the Hungarian-American solo circumnavigator Istvan Kopar and the British double circumnavigators John Chittenden and Richard Tudor.

This means that the service does not have to have been provided in the previous year. However, the prerequisite is that Cape Horn was passed under sail during a non-stop passage of over 3,000 nautical miles.

A jury will then select a list of 20 finalists from the proposals. The jury will include ten-time circumnavigator Jean-Luc van den Heede, Dee Caffari, American Stan Honey and Captain Dilip Donde, the first Indian sailor to sail solo around the world. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who won the Golden Globe Race in 1969, is the chairman. The association then selects six new male and female sailors from the top 20 nominees for its Hall of Fame.

Who's who of the ocean scene

The final award ceremony will take place on Saturday, 26 October 2024, in Les Sables-d'Olonne in France. This is also where the Cape Horn Association is based.

So far, 26 sailors from all over the world have made it into its hall of fame. These include famous names such as Dame Ellen MacArthur, Jeanne Socrates, Skip Novak, Franck Cammas and Michel Desjoyeaux.

The Online nomination form can be found on the website of the International Association of Cape Horners.

In addition to honouring Cape Horn circumnavigators, the association also maintains a list of those who have sailed around the world and rounded Cape Horn in the process. It does not matter whether it is a single-handed voyage or a circumnavigation with a crew. Most recently, Charles Caudrelier, Thomas Colville, Armel Le Cléac'h, Anthony Marchand and Éric Peron as well as the global solo sailors Philippe Delamare, Cole Brauer, Andrea Mura and Riccardo Tosetto were included in this register.
