The finalists for the Boatbuilding Oscars have been announced. 21 yachts of the current vintage will compete in the final. Unlike in the past, the classification into the various categories will only take place after sailing. For the sake of clarity, we have organised the candidates into three groups according to length.
All new or significantly revised boats from the current model year are eligible for nomination as Yacht of the Year. The number of newcomers varies between 50 and 70 and are recorded in a separate database. Every year in June, the EYOTY judges jointly filter the most interesting representatives in the respective categories from the possible candidates.
The yachts then have to face the judgement of the expert jury in two tests in September and October: first off La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast, then in the Mediterranean off Port Ginesta. Specialist journalists from all the major sailing magazines in Europe will meet to put the boats through their paces. In addition to sailing performance on the water, the inner values also count. Publisher Jochen Rieker and Editor-in-Chief Martin Hager are on the jury for YACHT.
The winner of the "European Yacht of the Year 2024" award will be announced at boot Düsseldorf in January. The representatives of the shipyards will be presented with the trophies as part of the big "Flagship Night".
In the 20 years that the Yacht of the Year award has been in existence, the jurors have awarded the "Sailing Oscar" to a total of 94 boats. More than 400 yachts were nominated. Most of the prizes went to France, followed by Germany, Denmark and Italy.
