The Multi 70 was lying without a mast on the grounds of a shipyard in the Italian Marina di Carrara near La Spezia. Jacked up on supports, the boat was presumably to be overhauled there. Shortly after ten o'clock on Thursday morning, a severe storm broke out, according to local media, and there is also talk of gusts of wind.
"Maserati" was lifted out of the supports and hurled to the ground. In the pictures that skipper Giovanni Soldini shared on Facebook, it can be seen that at least one support has drilled into one of the connections between the hulls. In addition, the bow is resting on the ground, while the stern is apparently still in the trestles.
Soldini wrote on Facebook: "We are still trying to determine the extent of the damage. Tomorrow the boat will be lifted back onto the trestles with a crane, then we will start with an ultrasound analysis to find all the damaged points."
The team leader of the Multi 70 also wrote: "These severe weather events, which cause very serious damage, are linked to the high water temperature in the Mediterranean and are occurring more and more frequently. The climate emergency is here for everyone and to limit the consequences, we must act now!" According to reports, the storm claimed two lives in the area and devastated several villages.
The Multi 70 "Maserati" last took part in the "Regata Dei Tre Golfi" off Naples. Beginning of 2022 the team won the " RORC Transatlantic Race ". The boat set a new record on the classic tarmac route between London and Hong Kong in 2018, beating the previous record by six days.
