The best tips to make winter storage work easier
Not everyone wants to crane their boat again just yet, and many use the first days of spring to do the final winter work on the boat. We show the best tips from YACHT readers on how to make winter storage work easier!

Winter storage lifehack 1:Favourable cover for dust-free painting in the hall

In order to be able to paint in the hall undisturbed by dust and dripping condensation, a cover over the boat makes sense. As it does not have to be storm-proof in the hall, lightweight and inexpensive materials are ideal for the construction. We opted for a frame made from cable conduits and a lightweight film. The tubes cost 99 cents for two metres. They are very flexible, so they can easily be bent into shape. We bought a six by ten metre sheet for 29 euros. The construction is held together by glue fixers. In contrast to cable ties, the staples have the advantage that the entire roofing can be easily reused and no waste is produced. The material costs just under 60 euros in total.

Winter storage lifehack 2: Roller skates for the palm tree

Instead of supporting the mast on two wobbly trestles before craning, I made two mobile mast trolleys. I fitted a 60 x 60 centimetre plate with swivel castors, two with brakes on each. The one metre long squared timber stands in a screw-on sleeve, and I cut the fork out of plywood. The total material costs for both mast trolleys came to 145 euros. All parts are available from DIY stores. The castors make it easy to move the mast.

Winter storage lifehack 3: Markings on the tarpaulin

The winter tarpaulin is heavily affected by wind and UV radiation, so that very robust material is required. A tarpaulin like this is heavy and difficult to pull over the boat in one piece. That's why we had a three-part tarpaulin made. We had the hem of each part edged with red and green stripes. Marked in this way, it is clear at a glance where the port and starboard side of the section is and in which direction it has to be laid over the boat.

Winter storage lifehack 4: A collar prevents colour stains

One of the challenges of overhead painting is not spilling paint on yourself. A plastic nozzle for cartridges can be helpful here. The tip is cut off far enough so that the brush handle can be pushed in with a little force. The resulting collar catches any paint that runs off. However, this only works with very small brushes - but it is particularly useful when painting corners that are difficult to access. And in such situations, you can't keep enough distance to avoid dripping paint.
