A French company has been working for years on making the transport of goods by sea more environmentally friendly. An entire fleet of cargo sailing ships under the label "Anemos" is the ambitious vision of the French company TOWT. The name stands for its mission: Trans Oceanic Wind Transport

The first cargo sailing ship is due to be completed this summer. It is currently being fitted out in France. A second ship is due to be completed shortly afterwards. By 2026, three ships of the so-called Phenx Class should be afloat.

A fleet for transatlantic transport

The aim of the fleet is to reduce the carbon footprint of freight transport by transporting goods using sailing power. The Anemos fleet will transport goods such as wine and rum between European and American harbours. The Anemos project thus embodies TOWT's vision of developing a sustainable and low-carbon future in maritime transport.

The TOWT cargo ships are larger than many ships already in operation and should be able to transport up to 1,100 tonnes. The aim is to appeal to customers who want to transport their goods by sea as sustainably as possible.

Once completed, the fleet will serve various routes, including from Europe to New York, the Caribbean and Brazil.

The brains behind "Anemos"

The company was founded in 2011 by Guillaume Le Grand and Diana Mesa and is headquartered in France. Le Grand is an experienced sailor and environmentalist. With his idea, the Frenchman wants to unite both worlds. Together with Diana Mesa, who specialises in sustainable development, he founded TOWT with the aim of creating an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional freight transport. They are working together with various partners.

Cargo ships - a tradition with a future trend

The idea of using sailing ships to transport goods again in the 21st century is not new. Until now, however, existing ships have mostly been used for this purpose. In Europe, for example, the "Avontuur", a cargo ship operated by the German organisation Timbercoast. The ship has been transporting goods such as coffee, cocoa and rum between Europe and North America for years. Other traditional sailing ships used for freight transport include the "Nordlys" and the "Tres Hombres".
