Sustainability is the focus of the Dutch company Vaan Yachts. The largest model to date from the cat experts in Hellevoetsluis is no exception. The shipyard consistently favours environmentally friendly materials and propulsion concepts. The hull, deck and all structural components are made from recycled aluminium. So-called "post-consumer scrap" (aluminium scrap from old car parts, road signs, window frames, etc.) is mixed with aluminium that has already been recycled and upgraded to the seawater-resistant aluminium standard 5083. But that's not all: Vaan-Yachts also consistently favours sustainable and, above all, recyclable solutions and products in the interior fittings and technical details. In addition, all twin-hulls that leave the shipyard are equipped with electric motors as standard.
The layout of the 23.80 metre long and eleven metre wide R8 yacht provides for two large owner's suites in the stern area, plus two additional guest cabins and a crew or children's cabin on the starboard side in the forward part of the hull. A total of twelve adults can sleep comfortably on board. The galley is located in the centre of the starboard hull and can be arranged flexibly. It can be closed on both sides so that the crew can prepare meals discreetly, or it can remain open if the owners prefer to take the culinary helm themselves. The total living space of the R8 is almost 150 square metres.
The forward cockpit is easily accessible via the forward saloon door. It provides a nice area to catch the late evening sun while staying connected with the family in the saloon. With the generous space on deck and in the cockpit, the shipyard says a flybridge is unnecessary. The low-slung main boom not only optimises the performance of the mainsail, but also ensures that the boat's sleek and sporty silhouette is maintained. The deckhouse roof provides ample space for solar panels that feed electricity into the on-board power supply system. The R8 offers numerous layout and equipment options. Aft cockpit or aft steering position? A hydraulically lowerable bathing platform that serves as a tender parking area, an integrated crane or a large saloon side door - anything is possible. Just like the much-acclaimed Vaan models R4 and R5 this catamaran was also designed as a solid and sustainable blue water cruiser with good sailing characteristics.

Editor in Chief YACHT
Martin Hager is editor-in-chief of the titles YACHT and BOOTE EXCLUSIV and has been working for Delius Klasing Verlag for 20 years. He was born in Heidelberg in 1978 and started sailing at the age of six, in an Opti of course. This was soon followed by 420s, Sprinta Sport and 470s, which he also sailed on the regatta course with his brother. His parents regularly took him on charter trips through the Greek and Balearic Islands. Even at a young age, it was clear to him that he wanted to turn his passion for water sports into a career. After graduating from high school and completing an internship at the Rathje boatbuilding company in Kiel, it was clear that he did not want to become a classic boatbuilder. Instead, he successfully studied shipbuilding and marine engineering in the Schleswig-Holstein state capital and focused on yacht design wherever he could. His diploma thesis dealt with the “Testing of a new speed prediction method for sailing yachts”. In 2004, the superyacht magazine BOOTE EXCLUSIV was looking for an editor with technical and nautical background knowledge, a position that was perfect for Martin Hager. The application was successful and a two-year traineeship was arranged. After twelve years as an editor, the editorial team changed and he took over responsibility for BOOTE EXCLUSIV as editor-in-chief in 2017. After long-time YACHT editor-in-chief Jochen Rieker moved to the role of publisher, Martin Hager also took over the position of editor-in-chief of Europe's largest sailing magazine YACHT, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year, at the beginning of 2023. When he's not working on topics for the two water sports titles, Martin Hager likes to go out on the water himself - preferably with kite and wingfoil equipment or on a little after-work trip across the Alster.
