Reading evenings with good sailing books are nice, but an afternoon of reading on a sailing ship is better. Two authors present their works on a traditional sailing ship on a day trip from Eckernförde under sail

The two authors Jan-Erik Kruse and Matthias Berg invite you to the sailing ship "Jachara" on Saturday, 8 June 2024. During the four-hour trip on the over 70-year-old gaff schooner, they provide exciting insights into their books "Yacht accidents" and "Kurs Neue Welt", which are set on the water and under sail.

During the afternoon on Eckernförde Bay, a look behind the scenes will also explain why Kruse started researching everything about failed sailing trips during the coronavirus crisis. After all, the experienced sailing instructor has seen numerous typical Sailing yacht accidentsThe causes and courses of these accidents are analysed. Based on accident reports analysed worldwide, his book uses case studies to present the main types of accident: Patent jibes, man overboard, collisions and more. If skippers and crew are better informed, they can not only react more quickly - many accidents would never happen in the first place!

Kruse has also included specific strategies for more safety in sailing in "Yacht Accidents". The importance of the "human factor" is dealt with, from personal risk attitudes to ways out of the mental trap. The book is published by Delius Klasing Verlag and can be ordered from here can be ordered.

Experiences on board the cargo ship "Avontuur"

At the time "Yacht Accidents" was written, the second author of the event was on board the cargo sailing ship "Avontuur" on an adventurous voyage to Central America. Built in Holland in 1902, the two-master has been travelling the classic trade wind route since 2014. It is operated by the German Timbercoast Initiative. It relies in particular on the support of voluntary and paying co-sailors. Matthias Berg returned home in the midst of the turmoil of the pandemic with a cargo hold full of rum, coffee and cocoa as well as an on-board diary filled with equally extraordinary experiences.

However, the book presentation is not only a special kind of reading because of the authors and their very different books. On board the traditional sailing ship, which was originally built on the Lofoten Islands and used as a fishing vessel, catering and the opportunity to sample the goods sailed are included. Tickets for the afternoon of reading, including chilli con & sin carne and non-alcoholic drinks, cost 77 (concessions 44) euros. The event starts on 8 June at 12 noon at Schiffbrücke 12 in Eckernförde.
