This week, the Wilhelmshaven sea lock has already been closed for three nights for urgent repairs. However, there was obviously not enough time to complete the work: In a recent notice to mariners (BfS), the responsible Weser-Jade-North Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority has now announced that operations will have to be suspended for at least three more nights.
This time, the closure will last from Monday 18 May to Wednesday 20 May 2026, again from 4 p.m. in the afternoon until 1 a.m. at night. The WSA does not say in the announcement whether further closures will be necessary afterwards.
The Wilhelmshaven sea lock, which connects the Jade with the naval harbour and the entrance to the Ems-Jade Canal, was built in its current form in 1964 after being severely damaged during the Second World War. The double lock has been struggling with technical problems for some time.
