When the frost comes, things can get bizarre. On poles, ropes, ships and on the surface, freezing water makes for fascinating sights, as in our gallery.

In February 2021, a displaced polar vortex brought unusually cold days to northern Germany. For a short time, fascinating landscapes emerged on the Schlei. Nico Krauss photographed them, his pictures can be seen in the gallery above. The incoming winter sun provides a golden light and brings a change to the otherwise frequent grey.

The magic of freezing water reminds us how fascinating and diverse nature can be. The frosty waters invite us to look at nature from a new perspective and enjoy moments of peace and tranquillity.

The cold winter air envelops the coast and lends it a magical charm. The waves break gently on the shore and leave glittering ice crystals in the sand. A walk along the coast becomes a romantic adventure. The sun is low on the horizon and bathes the landscape in a warm golden light.

In the evening, as the sun slowly sets, the sky turns into a spectacle of colour. Pink, purple and orange tones paint the sky and are reflected in the calm water. It is as if nature itself has created a painting to emphasise the romance of the moment. Winter romance by the sea is a special experience. The combination of the raw beauty of the sea and the winter silence creates an atmosphere that makes hearts beat faster.
