The three new multi-purpose vessels of the Scharhörn class are the pride and joy of the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration. No wonder: as replacements for their decades-old predecessors, they will greatly expand the authority's capabilities on the North and Baltic Seas. The eponymous Type ship "Scharhörn" was recently christenedIt will be stationed in Kiel.
In addition to the "Mellum", which is destined for Wilhelmshaven, the new "Neuwerk" is to be based in Cuxhaven when it enters service in 2027 - and send its almost 30-year-old predecessor of the same name into retirement.
The only problem is that the new "Neuwerk" is almost 30 metres longer than the old one - too big to be able to safely call at and use the existing berth at Woltmankaje. Although this was already foreseeable when the construction contract was awarded in 2020, a solution has now been found: a suitable harbour is simply being built elsewhere.
This was found a little further west in the ferry harbour. The large basin has so far been used by the Helgoland ferry and the Cuxhaven yacht club. Alternative berths are to be found for them. The corresponding letter of intent for the "relocation" and the associated ownership issues has now been signed by the city, the authorities and the state-owned harbour company.
The new home of the "Neuwerk" will require new quays, facilities to supply the multi-purpose vessel and a building yard. Nothing is yet known about the costs of the planned new building. And there is also a problem here: as reported by NDR, construction cannot begin until 2030 at the earliest. Until then, the new 200-million-euro vessel will have to find temporary accommodation - probably on the outside of the Seebäderbrücke bridge.
