The long-awaited opening of the Prerow island harbour and the new pier is imminent. The harbour party can also be worthwhile for water sports enthusiasts

On Wednesday, 16 October, the longest pier in the Baltic Sea, which stretches over 720 metres, will be officially opened. The inauguration will be celebrated with a big party, the weather should be fine and a lot is planned. So if you want to get a first impression, you can put a nice date in your diary for Wednesday. However, it will be difficult to sail into the harbour on your own keel to take part in the party. This is because it will not be open to shipping until a day later, from 17 October, according to the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Ministry of Agriculture. However, it is certainly possible to enter the harbour early with a special permit.

The DGzRS rescue cruiser "Nis Randers" will also take up its new berth on Wednesday. In addition to this, 50 further berths for pleasure craft will be inaugurated in the harbour area, which covers around 10,000 square metres, in addition to the berth for passenger ships, a few fishing boats and a 350 square metre multifunctional building with sanitary facilities. The island harbour replaces the closed Darßer Ort emergency harbour. Construction took more than two years and planning began ten years ago. The opening was postponed several times, but this Wednesday is the day.

The opening programme begins with the arrival of Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) at 5 pm on the new pier forecourt. Environment Minister Till Backhaus and Prerow's Mayor Christian Seidlitz will also be present. After the obligatory speeches, the official symbolic handover of the pier will take place at 5.45 pm.

The "Nis Randers" will arrive at 18:05. What's special: The sun will set over the Baltic Sea at 18:08 and the forecast is for clear, windy weather. This could be romantic.

At 7 p.m., the pier is illuminated in a special way. A total of 5.6 kilometres of cable have been laid and 600 special lights integrated into the handrails to illuminate the bridge at night. There will be music to accompany the illumination.

Starting at 7.30 pm, the celebration will be a public party with food, drinks and music on the forecourt and the bridge until late into the night.

The completion of the bridge not only means a new tourist attraction for the municipality of Prerow, but also an important new stop for water sports enthusiasts on the sometimes quite long stretch of sea between Warnemünde and Barhöft or Hiddensee.
