An updated set of rules now applies in the harbour area of Copenhagen. It applies to everyone travelling on the waterways of the Danish capital. Sailors can find an overview of the most important regulations here.

Following an extensive consultation process with port users and the relevant authorities, a new set of port regulations came into force on 10 January 2026. According to the port authority By & Havn, it is intended to ensure safety and order in the changing harbour.

Activities requiring general authorisation

  • Open fires and setting off fireworks.
  • Loud music on Friday and Saturday between 22:00 - 09:00, and Sunday to Thursday and on public holidays 20:00 - 07:00
  • Diving

Fishing

  • Absolute ban in Svanemøllehavnen, Færgehavn Nord and the popular Langelinie marina.
  • Where fishing is not prohibited in Copenhagen harbour, it must be carried out in compliance with restrictions arising from other legislation and private property rights.

Water sports

  • The main Kronløbet channel has been widened, which recreational skippers must observe with regard to the current regulations. (A separate second fairway was already established for recreational shipping on its southern edge in 2024).
  • Anchoring is only permitted in Svanemøllebugten outside Kalkbrænderiløbet and the marinas.
  • It is forbidden to move a boat under sail in the harbour area of Copenhagen
  • All vessels with a length of 15 metres or more and vessels used for commercial passenger transport must use an activated AIS transponder.
  • All motorised watercraft with a width of 2.5 metres or more must be able to travel at least 6 knots in the main channel and in the canals.
  • It is forbidden to drive motorised watercraft off the beach at Valby Parken and Svanemøllestrand.
  • Boaters must not obstruct other boats by travelling excessively slowly or stopping suddenly during normal navigation without good reason.

Bathing

  • Only allowed in the official bathing areas.

In the event of an immediate serious threat to health and safety in the Port of Copenhagen that requires immediate intervention, the Port Authority will take the necessary measures without prior order and at the expense of the person responsible.
