A sailor from Wismar has been missing in Mecklenburg Bay since Whit Monday after his yacht was washed overboard in high seas. The skipper was caught by a large wave at around 11.30 a.m. and immediately drifted off in the water.
The wife tried in vain to rescue her husband. The subsequent search by the rescue services had to be called off for the time being as darkness fell yesterday.
According to previous information, it was an eight-metre yacht from Wismar, which the owners had set sail from Kühlungsborn on Monday morning. Their voyage was to take them into the Fehmarn Sound in winds from the north-east, force 5 to 6 Beaufort.
According to the Travemünde water police, the distress call came at around 2.15 p.m. from ships providing assistance that had sighted the yacht off Dahme. At the time, the boat was drifting downwind with its sails torn. The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) immediately launched a large-scale search for the 55-year-old. The 52-year-old woman, who was in shock, received medical treatment.
