Body of father of regatta sailor found on IJsselmeer island

Employees of the Dutch Forestry Commission came across the body of the 53-year-old German man floating on the shore of a small island in the IJsselmeer. He had fallen out of his support boat during the Holland Regatta off Medemblik a week ago and had been missing ever since.

The victim was the father of a German C-squad sailor. He had been watching his daughter from his private motorboat during a race. According to the Dutch organisers, the boat was found unattended at midday. The immediate search and rescue operation, in which the police and coastguard were involved, was unsuccessful.
