What initially sounds like a beach toy becomes an adventure machine for Michael Kujawa: a five-metre-long beach catamaran that was originally designed for sailing on inland lakes. He not only circumnavigated all the German North and East Frisian Islands, but also spent six weeks sailing through the Mediterranean and saw numerous Greek islands. This proved to be the perfect opportunity to explore the possibilities of this minimalist form of sailing, as the music teacher from Lower Saxony explains in the podcast.
The challenges of this type of sailing are enormous - not only from a nautical perspective, but also logistically. The encounters with the wind and waves of the open sea demanded constant attention to the area and the weather conditions - especially when Michael Kujawa was sailing through the Aegean. Despite the risks, the sailor enjoyed the feeling of freedom when lying on the beach under the starry sky or on the trampoline of his catamaran. Michael Kujawa talks openly about the technical limits of his catamaran, necessary repairs and how his experience in sea kayaking helped him to overcome these challenges.
The Baltic Sea storm surge of 2023 was a particularly poignant experience: Michael and his wife had to abandon their Malö 50 at the last minute during the storm - the boat was badly damaged. In the podcast, he talks about the lessons he learnt from this event and describes how he integrates his hobby into his private life. The reactions of his students to his sailing endeavours are also mentioned, as are his plans for the next big trip.
