The reason: last week, the crew of a charter yacht tried to call at the former port of refuge Darßer Ort. However, it has been closed since September 2023. Since then, the entrance has become increasingly silted up. The sailors, who are from Italy, didn't seem to have realised this - and ran aground.
The rescue cruiser "Nis Randers" received the distress call at around 7 p.m. last Thursday. This was announced by DGzRS spokesman Nils Sander in response to an enquiry from YACHT. The 28-metre-long ship was stationed in the Darßer Ort port of refuge until last year. Since it has been closed, it has been temporarily berthed in Barhöft, west of Rügen. The daughter ship "Uwe" arrived at the harbour and was lowered into the water. Due to its shallow depth, it was able to tow the damaged vessel free.
However, according to Sander, five wind forces from the east, waves and darkness made further operations difficult. The charter yacht was therefore towed to the nearby island harbour of Prerow. The crew on board remained unharmed. However, it is not known whether the yacht suffered any damage as a result of the mishap.
As a result of the incident, the shipwrecked vessel probably became one of the first guests of the as yet unopened island harbour - albeit involuntarily. The rescue cruiser "Nis Randers" also made its first acquaintance with its new home. It will be stationed in the round harbour as soon as the harbour opens. It is still unclear when this will be, according to Sander.
According to the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Ministry of the Environment, the new harbour should have been opened in July of this year. However, poor weather conditions in winter and delivery difficulties delayed work on the harbour, which is intended to replace the Darßer Ort emergency harbour that was closed and dismantled last year (the YACHT reported). In addition to the rescue cruiser, around 40 yachts and three local fishermen will also be able to stay in the harbour.
