New statements from the organiser and an eyewitness shed further light on the incident involving the Oyster 825 “Viva La Vida” during Hamilton Island Race Week. The yacht struck a reef, sent out a Mayday call and capsized despite an additional pump being deployed. All ten people on board were rescued. It remains unclear why so much water flooded in following the impact.

The Accident involving the Oyster 825 ‘Viva La Vida’ The incident can now be described in more detail. During Hamilton Island Race Week on Friday 21 August 2026, the yacht struck a reef in the vicinity of Long Island in the Whitsunday Passage. It sent out a Mayday call, took on water and later capsized despite the deployment of an additional pump. According to the organiser, all ten people on board made it safely to Hamilton Island Marina.

The exact point where the vessel ran aground and the officially confirmed coordinates have not been published. A local eyewitness, Ben Archer, stated that he was near the northern tip of Long Island when he heard the distress call. His account complements the statement now released by the Hamilton Island Race Week team.

Organiser confirms contact with the reef

According to the Race Week organisers, the crew of the “Viva La Vida” issued a Mayday call during a race after the yacht struck a reef. Vessel Traffic Services were alerted and took charge of coordinating the emergency response. Hamilton Island Marina provided an additional pump. However, it was unable to stop the water from flooding in.

The pump was brought on board by a support boat

The most detailed account to date of the final minutes before the capsizing comes from Ben Archer. He was travelling on a motor yacht with two other people when the Mayday call was received. According to his account, a barge from Hamilton Island reached the scene shortly afterwards. It was carrying a diesel-powered pump.

The pump was first taken to Archer’s boat and from there onto the “Viva La Vida”. The crew apparently had difficulty getting it to work. Archer therefore went on board himself and helped to start it up. The pump eventually started working, but was no longer able to cope with the volume of water coming in.

Shortly afterwards, the Oyster listed to one side and capsized a little later. Archer ended up in the water – or rather, on the capsized hull – along with two other sailors. The rest of the crew were already on the support boat by that point. According to his account, the evacuation proceeded in an orderly manner despite the situation.

Secured, but not yet recovered

Australian media report that the yacht, which was floating upside down, has been secured and anchored to prevent it from drifting onto reefs or other sensitive areas again. With a boat of this size, the concern is not only the loss of the wreck but also the risk of further damage to the reef. The yacht, which weighs around 56 tonnes, has also been stabilised using lifting bags.

The next step is to tow the vessel to Mackay. When this can take place will depend on weather and salvage conditions.

The authorities are investigating the incident. Maritime Safety Queensland is dealing with the incident; the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is assessing potential damage to the reef. According to the information released so far, no diesel spill has been reported. There is currently no confirmed information regarding possible sanctions against the skipper, such as heavy fines for damage caused within the Marine Park.

Why did so much water get in?

The key technical question remains unanswered. Oyster explained that ‘Viva La Vida’ had been sailing fast downwind under spinnaker in shallow water when she struck a rock or a reef. The lower part of the keel was severely damaged in the incident; the ballast bulb was lost.

The loss of ballast explains the subsequent instability, but does not answer the question of how the water got in. Photographs show that a stub of the keel remains attached to the hull. No further damage to the hull is visible, even in more recent photographs.

What should you do after running aground?

Following a grounding, damage to the keel root, hull laminate and keel bolts should be checked as soon as possible. Visible cracks, spalling or a loose joint between the keel and the hull may indicate structural stress, as explained in the guide to Inspection of the keel-hull joint explains. In the event of a sudden flood, the first priority is Spill response at sea; a pump can buy time, but it is no substitute for effective sealing or a decision to evacuate.

No proven link to ‘Polina Star III’

The accident inevitably brings back memories of the The Oyster 825 ‘Polina Star III’, which sank in 2015. However, there is still no evidence of a technical link between the two incidents. The damage observed at the time following the salvage operation was markedly different: on the ‘Polina Star III’, the keel, the keel connection and large sections of the surrounding hull structure were affected. In the case of the “Viva La Vida”, the only thing that has been confirmed so far is that the ballast bulb was lost following contact with the reef.

Oyster is sticking to its preliminary assessment. Only once the vessel has been salvaged and a detailed investigation carried out will it be possible to determine what damage the impact caused and why the flooding was so severe. Until then, any further explanation of cause and effect would be mere speculation.
