According to the Warnemünde Federal Police, the distress call from the sailing yacht reached the federal police vessel "Bamberg" via VHF. According to initial information, one person had been hit on the head by the boom and was initially unconscious. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Bremen then alerted the rescue helicopter. At the same time, the "Bamberg" sailed to the position of the yacht.
On site, the emergency services used the on-board inspection boat to reach the sailing yacht. At the same time, a paramedic from the helicopter was winched onto the yacht. When the rescue team arrived, the injured person was already responsive again. The crew of the sailing yacht had already given first aid to the severely bleeding head wound - an important initial measure that can be crucial in such situations.
After the assessment, the rescue team decided to transport the injured person to hospital by helicopter. To do this, the rescue helicopter landed directly on the "Bamberg". There it took over the patient for onward transport to Greifswald University Hospital.
Injuries caused by the main boom are among the most frequent serious accidents on board sailing yachts and repeatedly lead to head injuries with unconsciousness.
