From today, the ZDF documentary “Terra X: The Drama Surrounding the Superyacht Bayesian” is available on the streaming platform. The film will be broadcast on ZDF on Sunday 2 August 2026 at 7.30 pm.
The film focuses on the sinking of the ‘Bayesian’ on 19 August 2024 off Porticello in Sicily. According to ZDF, the documentary features previously unseen video footage, witness statements and insights into the ongoing investigation. Anyone wishing to familiarise themselves with the case before the programme airs can find the the latest developments in the investigation into the sinking of the ‘Bayesian’.
The focus is on the question of why the superyacht, which was deemed seaworthy, found itself in distress and sank within a matter of minutes. ZDF has announced that the programme will feature, amongst other things, statements from experts at the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch and from scientists. Karsten Börner, captain of the neighbouring ‘Sir Robert Baden Powell’, is also set to speak. He and his crew rescued 15 survivors following the accident.
Why the Segler case continues to be a talking point
The “Bayesian” is 56 metres long and was at anchor off Porticello on the night of the accident. There were 22 people on board: twelve guests and ten crew members. Seven people died, including the British businessman Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah.
For sailors, this case is relevant not only because of the scale of the disaster. It raises fundamental questions about seamanship: How quickly can a thunderstorm situation in the Mediterranean escalate? What role do the mast, keel angle and wind-exposed surface area play? And what information must skippers and crews have regarding a vessel’s actual stability limits?
The British safety investigation has already made it clear that the issue of stability plays a key role. Investigations, expert reports and accountability
The case is not yet closed. The British MAIB is conducting a safety investigation with the aim of preventing future accidents. The Italian public prosecutor’s office, on the other hand, is investigating criminal matters. Among other things, allegations have been made against crew members.
Opinions also differ as to the extent to which the weather, the vessel’s characteristics, stability documentation and the crew’s actions contributed to the accident.
