Together with a 28-year-old fellow sailor, he had presumably set off on a trip from the ship's berth in Dresden-Neustadt on 21 December. The two did not get far; the boat capsized just a few hundred metres from the berth. The men went overboard. There was a strong wind at the time of the accident.
A witness who had observed the capsize informed the police. The police dispatched rescue teams to the scene of the accident between kilometres 58 and 59 of the Elbe, including the fire brigade with two boats.
The 28-year-old sailor clung to the boat after falling into the water. He was rescued and taken to hospital. The 36-year-old, on the other hand, went adrift in the Elbe river. Despite an extensive search operation, which included a police helicopter with a thermal imaging camera, he was not found.
The search continued days later and the search radius was significantly extended, although there was no longer any hope of finding the missing sailor alive. Last week, the news came that his body had been discovered. And not that far from the scene of the accident. The body of the deceased had apparently become entangled between the rocks on the shore, as reported by the DNN, the "Dresdner Neuesten Nachrichten".
The DNN also reports that the cause of the accident has not yet been officially clarified and that the surviving boat owner is being investigated for endangering shipping traffic.
