A Polish sailor found himself in distress off Norderney on Sunday evening (26 July 2026). His boat had run aground on a groyne on the island’s northern beach. A large contingent of rescue workers brought the man safely ashore.
By the time the emergency services arrived, the skipper had already left his boat unaided and was subsequently examined by the ambulance service as a precaution. It was not immediately clear whether he had been injured or what had caused the accident. The boat could not be salvaged straight away. This latest incident is the latest in a series.
A large contingent of firefighters, the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) and the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) rushed to the scene of the accident. According to the DLRG, a sailing boat that had run aground on a groyne had previously been reported. The emergency services secured the boat, which was lying in the surf. The skipper, who had been alone on board, managed to make his way ashore from the stricken vessel.
Numerous holidaymakers watched the dramatic rescue operation on the beach. It was not possible to salvage the boat immediately. The cause of the accident is still unclear. It is also not yet known whether the sailor who was rescued sustained any injuries.

According to tidal data from the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) for the Norderney Reef Channel, low tide occurred on Sunday afternoon at 16:16. At around 6.00 pm – 1 hour and 44 minutes later – the tide began to rise again. At this location, an incoming tide means that the tidal current flows from west to east; at the north-western tip of Norderney, this is towards the land and the beach area. A boat navigating the fairway at this time is continuously pushed sideways – silently and not immediately noticeable without actively checking its position.
Furthermore, there is little space: at the scene of the accident, the buoy-marked channel initially runs about one nautical mile from the groynes on Nordstrand, but narrows to less than half a nautical mile further on. The video also shows just how close the buoys are to the shore. Given the narrow distance, even a slight deviation can be enough to take a boat out of the safe corridor – particularly if the boat’s course is not regularly checked by back-bearing, i.e. looking back at buoys or landmarks that have already been passed. Furthermore, less than two hours after low tide, the water level is still too low for a safe passage through the strait.
According to forecasts from several weather services, there were also north-westerly gusts reaching Beaufort 6 to 7: an onshore wind that intensified the effect of the tidal current – which was already flowing eastwards – on a boat. Persistent rain showers further reduced visibility.
This latest incident is the latest in a worrying series. It was only on 3 July that a Dutch skipper ran aground on Nordstrand in stormy weather with his eight-metre-long sailing boat – He had to be rescued from the boat by the ambulance service and the fire brigade, with the help of an excavator, and was then taken to hospital. A few days later, he failed again in his attempt to free the boat and had to be towed away by the sea rescue service.
IIn April 2025, a sailing yacht carrying two adults and four children became stuck between the Schluchter and Dovetief shipping channels as the tide was ebbing; The sea rescue cruiser “Otto Diersch” towed the boat free and took it to Norddeich. The Seegatt strait between the East Frisian islands of Juist and Norderney is considered challenging even by experienced sailors. Precise navigation is essential, as the fairways pass close to dangerous sandbanks. Marine rescue services also warn that running aground in this area is extremely dangerous for both the vessel and its crew. Natural dynamic processes mean that the fairways are constantly shifting. It is essential to obtain up-to-date information on the situation before entering the Seegatt.
Safe passage is nevertheless possible, as demonstrated by the hundreds of sailors who pass through the Seegatten every year without incident – provided the conditions are right and preparations have been made carefully. Two buoy-marked channels lead into the Norderney Seegatt: the Schluchter channel from the west and the Dovetief from the north-east. The latter is considered the safer route – according to an explicit warning from the DGzRS, the Schluchter channel should ‘only be navigated by very experienced local sailors who are thoroughly familiar with the specific sea conditions’.
The best time to pass through is between two hours before and one hour after high tide – ideally whilst the tide is rising, when there is sufficient water beneath the keel. If wind speeds exceed 5 Beaufort, you should generally avoid passing through; if the wind is blowing against the current or there is a persistent swell, even a wind force of 4 may be too much. This is because even a barely perceptible swell can build up within seconds into steep, breaking ground swells when the water depth changes from 15 to 2 metres – and even if the wind has long since died down, the swell can persist for many hours afterwards.
Anyone navigating the Seegatt should keep the engine running, or at least have it ready to start, so as to remain manoeuvrable at all times – even under sail. It is also crucial to navigate strictly along the buoy line, but not too close to it, and to look not only ahead towards the next buoy but also to check astern regularly: this is the only way to tell whether the boat is being pushed sideways by the current or the wind. The buoys are not necessarily situated in the deepest channel, but on what is known as the ‘high edge’. Current Notices to Mariners (BfS) and Marine News (NfS) provide information on the current position of the buoys. Harbour masters, sailors familiar with the area and the crews of local lifeboats can provide further valuable advice on the safe distance at which to pass the buoys. The VHF radio should also be set to standby on channel 16.
Navigation in this area is made even more difficult by ongoing cable-laying work – which has a direct impact on the routes chosen by sailors. The safer route through the tidal channel in the Norderney and Baltrum area is currently not passable throughout. Cables are being laid to connect the offshore wind farms. At high tide, the mudflats serve as a transport route for cable protection pipes and for laying subsea cables. The transport vessels cross the mudflat channel. As a result, there will be short-term closures during the summer months until 2029. The fact that this situation can lead to dangerous evasive manoeuvres into the Seegatt was demonstrated in September 2025. Shortly after low tide, two sailors ran their seven-metre-long boat aground on a sandbank in the Schluchter fairway. They were at the mercy of the surf – the Norderney mudflat fairway, which would have been much safer for them, was closed at that time.
As early as April 2024, four British sailors had, according to their own accounts, intended to use the Dovetief fairway. However, they stated that they had been forced to divert to the more dangerous Schluchter fairway due to cable works.
The Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA) has recently announced further such works in its Notices to Mariners (BfS). Consequently, the Norderneyer Riffgat will be completely closed between the marker buoys “D 28a” and “D 32” from 3 to 8 August and from 10 to 14 August 2026 due to work being carried out by the cable-laying vessel “Barbarossa 1”. At the same time, towing operations by the vessel ‘Störtebeker’ will take place from 29 July until, it is expected, the end of September 2026. It will be transporting cable protection pipes, approximately 580 metres in length, northwards around Norderney to Nordstrand.
