Anyone planning a sailing trip needs reliable weather data. This applies to coastal sailing just as much as it does to longer voyages. As well as the familiar standard solutions, sailors now have access to a wide range of specialised apps that provide high-resolution weather models for specific sailing areas or integrated route planning directly on a tablet. The problem is that expensive subscriptions and confusing features make the decision more difficult than it needs to be.
As it is difficult to carry out a proper practical test of all available apps and their features, we have focused on analysing the apps’ features and evaluating App Store reviews. This overview is intended to help you better assess the strengths and weaknesses of the individual systems and make the right choice for your personal requirements and budget. The following overview presents the most powerful apps for the 2026 sailing season.

DMI Weather
Sailors in Danish waters, in particular, should keep an eye on the app from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (DMI). At its heart is the ultra-local ‘HARMONIE’ model, with a grid resolution of just 2.5 kilometres, which accurately captures wind patterns between the islands. The hourly current charts under the ‘Hav’ menu item are also very helpful, as are the centimetre-accurate water level forecasts for the harbours. The app has been criticised for its significant language barrier, as it is available exclusively in Danish. As a government service, it is free of charge and supported by discreet advertising.
DWD weather warnings
In German coastal waters, the German Weather Service’s WarnWetter app can play a key role in helping to avoid severe weather. Its core strength lies in the official warnings of storms or thunderstorms, which are sent directly to the user’s device via push notifications. The official marine weather reports in the tried-and-tested text format are also very useful. The app offers a high level of reliability for the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts. With a one-off payment of €2.49 for the full version, the app is a cost-effective investment in safety on board.
LuckGrib
LuckGrib is specifically optimised for use in challenging conditions via satellite connections such as Iridium GO!. From a technical perspective, the app stands out thanks to its extremely small data packets, which save time and money on satellite connections. Furthermore, LuckGrib offers highly flexible routing: The skipper can specify exactly to the app how certain obstacles or islands should be navigated around, rather than simply following a rigid suggestion. A key difference compared to many competitors is the user-friendly pricing model: instead of ongoing subscriptions, you pay a one-off fee. The basic app for GRIB data access costs 34.99 euros. Added to this are the weather routing feature for 69.99 euros and the offshore module for satellite data downloads for a further 69.99 euros. Anyone wishing to purchase the complete system for global use, including routing, will therefore pay a one-off fee of around 175.00 euros. Please note that the versions for iOS and Mac require separate purchases.

Meteoblue
Meteoblue is a weather app used for detailed data analysis and comparing different forecasts. The app analyses data from over 40 different weather models and uses this to calculate the ‘Predictability Index’. This shows, as a percentage, how reliable the wind forecast is for the day, which is particularly helpful in identifying unstable weather conditions. For sailors, the charts that combine wind data directly with wave height and wave period are also useful. One point of criticism is the confusing menu navigation, as many functions are specifically geared towards aviation. The subscription model is also split into two parts: In the app, you pay €6.99 per year simply to remove adverts, whilst the comprehensive professional package (point+) is a separate subscription for the website. Since June 2024, Windy.com has held a majority stake in the service, but it continues to operate as a standalone tool.
Météo Marine
The app, operated by Météo Consult, is particularly suitable for sailing trips in European waters, especially along the French coast and in the Mediterranean. At its heart is a proprietary, high-resolution model with a grid resolution of just one kilometre, which depicts local wind phenomena much more accurately than global models. As well as standard wind and wave forecasts, the app provides detailed information on ports, anchorages and specific coastal risks. Whilst a 24-hour forecast on the interactive maps is available free of charge, more in-depth analyses and personalised alerts require the Zen subscription for €5.99 per month. Sailors value the app for its high reliability in coastal areas, but point out that its full functionality is primarily optimised for Europe.
NavimetriX
As a modern, cross-platform newcomer, NavimetriX bridges the gap between operating systems. The app runs identically on Android, iOS, Windows and Mac using a single central account, with all routes and settings automatically synchronised via the cloud. Technically, NavimetriX is based on the tried-and-tested algorithms of SailGrib and Weather4D, but offers a contemporary user interface including an autopilot interface and active AIS collision warning. For its chart data, the service uses official raster and vector charts via GeoGarage. The pricing model is two-tiered: the Premium app costs around €80 per year, plus chart subscriptions ranging from €30 to €60 each, bringing the total annual cost to between €110 and €140.
PocketGrib
In an era of high-resolution weather graphics, PocketGrib offers a practical alternative that proves its worth above all through its optimised data usage. Whilst graphics-intensive applications often reach their limits on weak mobile networks (2G/Edge), PocketGrib enables the targeted download of compact GRIB files (compactly formatted meteorological data). Sailors can request parameters such as wind, air pressure, wave height or CAPE values for a precisely defined area. Once downloaded, the app acts as a reliable offline viewer for analysing hourly forecasts. Criticisms include the design, which has remained unchanged for years, as well as the lack of modern local models and plotter functions. Nevertheless, the app is regarded within the community as an indispensable fallback for situations with an unstable internet connection. The pricing model is user-friendly: for a one-off payment of €6.99 (iOS) or €2.99 (Android), users are granted permanent access to the GRIB servers without the need for a subscription.
PredictWind
PredictWind is a powerful weather app which, in its full version, utilises up to eleven different forecast models. The software offers precise weather routing and a departure planner to determine the safest route based on the vessel’s polars. Technically, it is optimised for narrowband data transmission via satellite (e.g. Iridium). As it is complex to use and the professional features require expensive subscriptions, the system often seems over-the-top for purely coastal navigation. The cheapest entry-level subscription (Basic), costing around €29.00 per year, offers only basic weather forecasts without a routing function. Professional weather routing and the departure planner are only available from the Standard subscription onwards, costing around €274.00 per year; the Professional version costs around €499.00.
Sailgrib WR
SailGrib WR is regarded as one of the most powerful solutions for tech-savvy Android users. The app takes a consistent offline approach, with weather routing calculated directly on the device itself, which reduces reliance on external servers and enhances safety on the high seas. The software is specifically optimised for narrowband data retrieval via satellite systems such as Iridium GO!. The official Navionics interface is also very useful, as it allows existing chart subscriptions to be mirrored directly into the application at no extra cost. Furthermore, NMEA gateways enable the integration of live instrument data and AIS targets. The pricing model, offering an annual subscription for €45.99 or a lifetime licence for €139.00, is considered fair.

SMHI Weather
Just as the DMI provides services for Denmark, the SMHI does the same for Swedish waters. The app features a dedicated section for maritime weather (‘Sjöväder’), which is specifically tailored to conditions in the archipelago. Technically, the service utilises the high-resolution ‘AROME’ model, which takes local winds and terrain features into account in greater detail than international applications. In addition, the SMHI provides official coastal warnings and precise water level data, which can be particularly useful when navigating in the archipelago. As a state-funded service, the app is completely free of charge and contains no adverts.
Squid mobile
Squid Mobile has established itself as a powerful yet easy-to-use routing app that makes professional GRIB data accessible to everyone. The app offers a free basic version, which, however, only displays rough model data with a short forecast period and does not include the routing function. The full range of features is only unlocked by purchasing regional data packages.
For example, the high-resolution Europe package, including routing, currently costs 33.99 euros per year, although flexible options such as weekly or monthly subscriptions are also available for short-term sailing trips. Whilst competitors often require external programmes or spreadsheets to adjust boat specifications, with Squid Mobile the values can be edited directly within the app interface. This allows users to view their yacht’s performance data in order to obtain even more precise routing results. As well as the mobile versions for Android and iOS, the app is also available as a desktop version for Windows and Mac, enabling seamless planning between the chart table and the cockpit.
Weather4D
What SailGrib does for Android, Weather4D achieves as the leading technological solution for the iOS world. The app functions as a fully-fledged chartplotter when required, going beyond mere route planning. One interesting feature is the simulation function, which allows skippers to virtually sail planned trips in order to accurately assess weather windows. The presentation is elegantly implemented within the Apple ecosystem. Reviews frequently highlight the complex pricing structure: in addition to the one-off purchase of the routing version for €37.99, there are annual costs for high-resolution weather data (approx. €38.00) and for the chart data (€30 to €60). In practice, this often means that the costs in the first year add up to over €100.

Windfinder
Windfinder remains a reliable tool for quickly checking conditions in the cockpit. The app’s strength lies in its precise real-time data, which is generated via a dense network of global measuring stations. Whilst the ‘Superforecast’ offers hourly forecasts, the app is of limited use for large-scale weather planning at sea, as its focus is on individual locations. The main criticisms are the prominent adverts in the free version and the confusing distinction between the ‘Plus’, ‘Free’ and the outdated ‘Pro’ versions. The ad-free Plus subscription is available for €12.99 per year.
Windy.com
Windy.com has become the go-to choice on many yachts thanks to its clear graphical presentation of weather data. In particular, the fluid particle animations enable the skipper to intuitively grasp wind and wave movements. A key advantage for trip planning lies in the model comparison: the ‘Compare’ function allows forecasts from ECMWF, GFS, ICON and AROME to be compared side by side. Recent updates also allow route planning along a manually drawn course. In user reviews, the restrictive pricing policy is often criticised, as the free version only offers three-hour intervals, whilst the more precise one-hour forecast is reserved for paying premium customers. The annual subscription costs around €26.00.
Yr
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute’s app is well suited to tracking local weather conditions. Its standout feature is the so-called meteogram, a clear graph that accurately visualises wind, air pressure and precipitation. The rainfall forecast, in particular, is regarded as one of the most reliable on the market. Another major advantage is that Yr is completely free and free of intrusive adverts. As it does not display wind fields, the app only provides point forecasts for specific locations, which means the user must know their exact position or destination.
