Following several break-ins and engine thefts at Wieltsee, the marina’s management has now taken action. Their new operations manager has announced additional security measures, relying not only on further CCTV surveillance but also on the vigilance of the marina community. At the same time, he has ambitious plans for the marina’s future.
How YACHT online reported At least seven boats have been targeted by theft and vandalism at Wieltsee in recent weeks. Most recently, two motorboats were stolen from the Wieltsee Marina. The perpetrators removed the outboard motors and then left the boats adrift on the River Weser. The police are continuing to investigate whether the various incidents are linked. The harbour master has now spoken out.
A deterrent against theft
The past few weeks have not left Stefan Kern unscathed either. The harbour master of the Marina Wieltsee took over the port on 1 August; shortly afterwards, the spate of thefts began.
“Of course, we are monitoring the current situation. We are therefore taking the latest developments seriously and keeping a close eye on what is happening around the lake.”
Stefan Kern now wants to develop the marina with Security equipment such as CCTV cameras fit with. However, he does not wish to give a 100 per cent guarantee that this will prevent break-ins and thefts.
Raising awareness amongst owners
Rather, he believes it is important to involve the owners as well. Particularly in the case of high-quality equipment, owners should ensure that outboard motors are secured with suitable locks or chains. Whilst this is no guarantee, it does make it more difficult for potential thieves to succeed.
The aim of the measures and investment is to act as a deterrent to potential offenders. However, there is another point that is more important to the harbour master:
Our owners know the harbour and the surrounding area very well. If unfamiliar people catch their eye, behave unusually or appear to be scouting out moorings and boats, such observations are very valuable to us.”
Kern feels it is important to point out that unknown individuals in the marina should not be viewed with general suspicion. Rather, the aim is to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious sightings.
Plans for the future
Despite the ongoing thefts in his local area, Kern is optimistic about the future and has far-reaching plans for the marina and Lake Wielt. These include expanding the range of dining options with a new tenant and extended opening hours. Kern also wants to improve the car park situation and, in the long term, aims to restructure the outdoor area, including the playground.
The slipway is set to become more flexible for sailors and motorboat owners. With the help of an automated access barrier, Kern hopes to make the facility available outside regular opening hours. However, there is another issue that is particularly close to the marina manager’s heart:
“The marina is situated right next to the Weser Cycle Route. We would like to make better use of this potential in future and open up the marina to cycle tourists and the residents of the municipality of Weyhe as a destination for day trips and a place to relax.”
Kern’s aim is for the marina not to consist solely of moorings in future. Rather, it should be a waterside venue that everyone can enjoy equally.
