RE-LIVE: New king of the Vendée Globe! - Charlie Dalin crosses the finish line

From Vendée Globe prince to king: Charlie Dalin

Charlie Dalin reached the finish off Les Sables d'Olonne on 14 January 2025 after a record 64 days, 19 hours, 22 minutes and 49 seconds as the winner of the tenth Vendée Globe. NDR accompanied the arrival parallel to the French broadcasters with the signal from France. The same applies to Boris Herrmann's entry into the start and finish harbour scheduled for 3 pm. NDR anchor Sven Kaulbars will be presenting from the studio in Hamburg. Two-time circumnavigator, America's Cup participant and YACHT author Tim Kröger will be in the studio as a sailing expert.

10th Vendée Globe: New winner with a new record

With the arrival of 2024/25 Vendée Globe winner Charlie Dalin, the existing course record of his compatriot Armel Le Cléac'h was history. The Frenchman had taken 74 days, 3 hours and 35 minutes around the world on "Banque Populaire VIII" in the 2016/17 edition. While the winner of the last edition of the Vendée took significantly longer (Yannick Bestaven; 80 days, 3 hours, 45 minutes), Dalin beat the record time by almost ten days. Second-placed Yoann Richomme and Seabstien Simon in third place also sailed around the globe in the (previous) record time.

What is the Vendée Globe?

The Vendée Globe is a world-famous single-handed non-stop sailing race that leads around the world without assistance. Since its creation in 1989 (by Philippe Jeantot, inspired by the Golden Globe Race), it has been recognised as one of the most challenging sailing races, which, like the Olympic Games, only takes place every four years. The participants sail in special boats, the Imoca-60 monohull yachtsaround the globe. The race starts and finishes in Les Sables-d'Olonne, which is part of the French Pays de la Loire.

The 35-year history of the Vendée Globe has always been characterised by adventurers, by pioneers, daredevils, wreckers and skippers who only made it to the starting line off Les Sables d'Olonne by the skin of their teeth, with small budgets, outdated boats and a lot of passion. Only seven of the "Ocean's 13" in the first edition made it to the finish line. The failure rate of 46 per cent at that time has since fallen; most recently it was less than 30 per cent. But even today, finishing alone is an unimaginable feat for most people.

The route of the Vendée Globe

The course measures 24,300 nautical miles from Les Sables d'Olonne past the three large capes and back to the coastal town in the department of Vendée, which gave the non-stop regatta its name. Of the 200 participants so far before the current 2024/25 edition, only 114 made it to the finish within the classification.

The start of the Vendée Globe 2024/25

The regatta around the world began on 10 November off Les Sables d'Olonne with a record fleet of 40 participants. With a The skippers and their racing machines were seen off by hundreds of thousands of fans in a breathtaking parade over two months ago. The spectacle was broadcast by NDR. Germany's best-known sailor Boris Herrmann also broadcast the start live from on board the "Malizia - Seaexplorer".
