If there is one form of racing that could cost more than Formula 1, it is yacht racing. Ferrari is planning to try its hand at it. What is known so far

Ferrari is now venturing into the field of yacht racing, joining Formula 1 rivals Mercedes and Red Bull, who are already using their technologies in sailing. In co-operation with the experienced Italian skipper Giovanni Soldini, Ferrari is planning to build a new sailing boat under the name of the famous car brand.

Born in 1966, Soldini has won several round-the-world races, was the winner of the Transat Quebec-Saint-Malo, has won two Ostar races and can look back on more than 30 years of experience in solo and team sailing. As skipper of the "Maserati Multi 70", he set the record for the Hong Kong-London route in 2018 (47 days, 42 minutes and 12 seconds), the record for the English Channel in 2021 and won numerous other races and records.

Ferrari wants to achieve maximum performance at sea

The company explains why Ferrari suddenly wants to swap wheels and engines for hulls and sails by saying that the competition will help to develop cutting-edge technologies. The use of state-of-the-art technology - from conception to realisation - should ensure maximum performance at sea and at the same time promote innovations for sustainability.

Ferrari has not yet announced any details about the boat or the planned competitions. Giovanni Soldini, who previously worked with Maserati for eleven years, will be in charge of the project. Ferrari CEO John Elkann sees the new competition as an opportunity to take the brand to a new level.
