Greece is probably the most unspoilt area in the Mediterranean. No overpriced marinas, no buoy field rip-offs, no restaurants with crazy prices, no race for a berth in the early afternoon. Instead, island hopping at its best, often very stable sailing winds, super-friendly locals and beautiful towns as well as cultural highlights along many routes.
For some crews, there are certain islands that they have heard of and are drawn to: Santorini with its spectacular town on the crater rim of the ancient volcano, Mykonos' Little Venice row of houses with windmills at sunset, the idyllic fishing town of Naoussa on Paros. The list goes on and on, whether crews want to sail in the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, the Sporades or the Saronic and Argolic Gulfs.
But Greece also has its own rules: The Meltemi sometimes blows with force in midsummer and requires careful trip planning and seamanship. In the harbours, there are often no mooring lines or even marineros to help with mooring. The harbour infrastructure is sometimes basic. Anyone wishing to sail there for the first time will benefit from good trip preparation and route selection.
This is exactly what YACHT editor Andreas Fritsch to you in a webinar. He is head of the travel and charter department at YACHT, has been sailing in the Aegean for 25 years and is the author of a guide to Greece.
