The classic hand torch burns for just 60 seconds, whereas the signalling device from Odeo Flare Ltd. from England lasts for up to five hours, and even then only requires a battery change. Instead of pyrotechnics, there are five small laser LEDs in the head of the electric flare, which is around 26 centimetres long and weighs 330 grams. To further increase attention, the light head rotates at an irregular speed, causing the light source to flash for the observer. As the laser beam is emitted in the shape of a slit, the dangerous blinding of pilots should not be possible.
The LEDs are powered by three AA batteries. The torch is supplied with special lithium versions that can be stored for five years. However, normal batteries can also be used in an emergency.
The housing is modelled on that of conventional hand torches, waterproof and floatable - with the light head remaining above water. The distress signal is activated by screwing in the battery compartment lock. The flare can be switched off again just as easily. As the Odeo Flare works without pyrotechnics, it can easily be carried in flight luggage. Neither a certificate of competence nor a specialist certificate is required to purchase it.
A type approval for commercial shipping has been applied for, but the flare has not yet been approved in accordance with Solas.
In Germany, the Odeo Flare is sold by Proyacht and costs 179 euros.
