Tribord, the own brand of French sporting goods manufacturer Decathlon, is presenting a new automatic offshore lifejacket. The waistcoat is designed to be unconscious-proof, i.e. to turn people in the water into a floating position on their back, and was developed in collaboration with the French sea rescue organisation SNSM

The LJ 180N model is designed to ensure a safe position in the water thanks to an asymmetrical buoyancy chamber. The special feature: the buoyancy chamber can be detached from the harness using a zip. In this way, the lifejacket can be used as a lifebelt for safety on board, but without buoyancy.

A neoprene collar and padded shoulder straps are designed to ensure a high level of comfort. The waistcoat weighs 1.45 kilograms and offers 180 newtons of buoyancy. This is above the buoyancy of 150 newtons prescribed by ISO 12402-3. For comparison: in the last YACHT test (issue 23/2019), not all models in the 275 Newton class managed to reliably turn the tester onto his back.

The waist belt can be adjusted from a circumference of 60 centimetres to 130 centimetres. A 360-degree flashlight and the fluorescent buoyancy chamber are designed to increase visibility in the water.

Many Decathlon products are considered a good alternative to expensive brands at a favourable price. However, at €219.99, the price of the LJ 180N is not in the low price range.

The new Tribor LJ 180N offshore lifejacket is available at Decathlon.

Redakteur Test & Technik
