This set consists of three vibration dampers and is therefore intended for a machine with Saildrive.
The Spanish company Ellebogen offers vibration dampers for various marine diesel engines. A selection guide for Volvo Penta and Yanmar engines makes it easier to find the right size for your own diesel.

Engine vibrations not only put a strain on the boat's structure, but also on the crew's nerves. The Spanish company Ellebogen specialises in the manufacture of vibration dampers that effectively reduce these problems. The range includes suitable solutions for various boat diesel engines. Basically, the design of the vibration dampers is always the same: a base is bolted to the engine foundation. This part is connected with an elastic plastic to a threaded rod to which the engine is attached. Diesels with a shaft system usually have four attachment points, drives with a saildrive have three. The elasticity of the vibration dampers to match the diesel is crucial. If they are too hard, vibrations are not effectively reduced. If they are too soft, vibrations can even increase because the machine then wobbles. This is because the elastic engine mounts are not only intended to ensure that the diesel runs smoothly, they must first and foremost transfer the thrust of the propeller to the fuselage. However, a vibration damper that is too soft gets in the way of this power transmission. That is why there are many different models. This is where the Spanish manufacturer Ellebogen offers assistance.

Simple selection by motor model

The product search is user-friendly via the manufacturer's website. Boat owners with Volvo Penta or Yanmar drives simply enter their specific engine model and immediately receive a list of suitable vibration dampers. This avoids incorrect purchases and saves time when searching for compatible components. Particularly practical: The website directly displays complete sets containing all the dampers required for the respective engine.

In principle, the vibration dampers are also suitable for other engine manufacturers. In this case, however, it is necessary to research which properties are required.

Favourable alternative

Pricing varies depending on the engine model and the number of dampers required. Individual vibration dampers are available from 41 euros. Ellebogen offers complete sets depending on the engine model selected; for example, the complete damper set for a Volvo MD 2030 with Saildrive costs 211 euros. The products can be ordered directly via the Ellebogen.com website.

The effort required to install the vibration dampers depends heavily on the space available in the engine compartment. If it is rather cramped, it may be necessary to lift the machine for this purpose. To do this, the connection to the shaft or saildrive must be loosened and connections such as fuel and cooling water lines and the exhaust removed. This means that replacing the vibration dampers involves more work. In this case, it is advisable to combine the replacement directly with other maintenance work that requires the diesel to be lifted or moved. However, if there is sufficient space in the engine room, it can also be replaced in this way. The dampers are to be regarded as wearing parts and should be checked for signs of ageing during regular engine inspections. Typical signs of wear are cracks in the rubber material or increased engine vibrations.

Effective vibration dampers not only reduce the noise level on board, but also extend the service life of the engine and neighbouring components. The difference is particularly noticeable on longer engine journeys. The reduced vibrations are also easy on the crew's nerves.
