Swedish hardware manufacturer Seldén presents the E40rev, an electric winch that works in both directions of rotation and has two speeds.
With the E40rev, Seldén is entering a market segment in which only Harken is currently active. The American manufacturer's Rewind winch is also available as a 40-series model and can be fanned electrically. Lewmar had pursued a similar concept with the Revo series, but production was discontinued. The same applies to the manual Fierwin winches from Seldén presented a few years ago: they were also withdrawn from the market before they could become widespread. With the E40rev, the Swedes are now making a new attempt to establish the technology on the market - but this time with a motorised drive. This makes it possible not only to reel in the line at the touch of a button, but also to pay it out in a controlled manner. The line remains in the self-tailer.
The E40rev is based on Seldén's patented winch drum with asymmetrical ribs (ART), which is designed to ensure a reliable grip, and has two gears that can be used for both tight haulage and for fiddling. An additional safety aspect: the winch can be operated manually in the event of a power failure. A conventional winch handle is simply used for this purpose. Special feature: The electric drive can also be used with the winch crank inserted without the crank turning. As with all Seldén electric products, the drive is powered via the 42-volt SEL bus system. This system utilises an internal voltage booster and requires thinner cables than conventional 12-volt systems. According to the manufacturer, the compact design with brushless motors enables space-saving installation below deck. However, more installation space must be planned than with the normal electric winches from Seldén. As the mechanical clutch requires space, the motor cannot be installed in the drum as with the E40i winch, but sits underneath the winch.
The E40rev will be available from spring 2026. The recommended retail price is 30,000 Swedish kronor excluding VAT, which corresponds to around 2,700 euros. The control box and power supply unit for the SEL bus system are available separately. Those who already have other electrical components from Seldén on board can use the existing infrastructure. The first production boat that can be equipped with the E40rev is the Saffier SE28. Only a 40 winch is available at the start of sales. Larger models based on the same concept are due to follow towards the end of 2026.
