It was the shackle - at least on the Bavvaria 31. After using a PVC hose, calm reigned on board again
Whirring halyards can get on the nerves of tired sailors. Once the source of the noise has been recognised, the remedy can be quite simple

We sail a Bavaria 31, where the dirk was attached to the boom with a shackle, as on many boats. This led to a severe disturbance of the night's sleep. The long line vibrated and whirred at the slightest breeze. This noise was transmitted to the boom and the entire boat. This could be remedied by removing the shackle. We also covered the loop with a PVC tube as a damper.
