Reader tip of the week: Locking the sliding hatch from the insidePhoto: YACHT/J. Peschke
A simple piece of wood is placed between the front edge and the end moulding to protect against burglary.
Many yachts do not offer the option of locking the companionway from the inside. This simple wooden construction keeps uninvited guests out

Our sliding hatch cannot be locked from the inside. To be able to sleep peacefully despite this, we clamp a sturdy moulding between the rear end strip of the hatch and the front edge of the companionway. A small screw with a sawn-off head acts as a spike that grips into a hole in the end moulding to prevent the moulding from slipping off. The other end rests on the moulding of the companionway edging. The length is dimensioned so that this cover moulding can be easily removed with a flick of the wrist.
