Reader tip of the week: Launching the stern anchor without scrapesPhoto: YACHT/J. Peschke
Lower the stern anchor into the water without any scratches
Anchoring via the stern is unpopular, not only because the practical electric winch is usually missing. With this trick, you can at least avoid scratching the hull

Lower the stern anchor chain into the water without scratching it

Usually, more or less solid bow anchor fittings protect the ship's side from damage by the harness during anchoring manoeuvres. Many yachts lack this protection at the stern. However, as only the combination of hawser and chain leader is usually used here, there is a simple solution to the problem: The chain is stowed in a bailer or a cut-open canister and then gently lowered under the hull with a line. The anchor can then be deployed as usual and the chain runs out of the bucket without touching the hull.
