An 87-year-old solo sailor fell from his boat in Denmark and could only be rescued dead

According to the Funen police, an 87-year-old German sailor was found lifeless off the island of Ærø on Saturday 11 June.

The police in southern Jutland were first alerted after a runaway sailing boat was spotted in the southern Little Belt. A rescue operation was then launched by the Danish navy, which also involved a SAR helicopter.

The sailor was rescued by the helicopter crew near Ærø and flown to Odense University Hospital. According to Kenneth Taanquist, head of the Funen police watch, the man could not be rescued and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The relatives of the 87-year-old sailor have already been informed about the tragic accident.
