A Russian citizen stranded his 28-foot sailing yacht on the Danish west coast near Hvide Sande on Tuesday night. After struggling ashore, the exhausted and hypothermic solo sailor found help from German tourists, whose holiday home he knocked on

Now the case becomes curious. The Danish police are also in tow with the ambulance to ensure that there are no other people on board the stranded yacht.

Heine Bærentsen, police commissioner of Ringkøbing: "In conversation with the Russian skipper, it turned out that the man was on his way from Sweden to Spain to later sail across the Atlantic to North America. But he only made it as far as the west coast of Denmark."

As the Russian does not have a valid visa for Denmark, but was travelling in Danish waters, the matter is further complicated by the recently tightened entry regulations as a result of the war in Ukraine. However, the stranded sailor claims to have lived in Ukraine during the war.

The latest news on the strange stranding is that the Russian has applied for asylum in Denmark. His ship has now been salvaged - what will happen to it is just as uncertain.
