The location of a harbour was the decisive factor in how severely the combined natural events of the hurricane-like storm and the flood of the century affected piers, jetties, harbour buildings and other infrastructure.
Unprotected installations exposed to the east, such as Damp or Maasholm, were overrun by the extremely high water level in combination with the wind-whipped sea.
But even in a supposedly sheltered harbour such as the Wiking marina in Schleswig in the furthest corner of the Schlei, the small contact area of wind and water was enough to cause enormous damage. The result:
A dozen boats sank in the Wassersleben marina of Segel-Sport Flensburg-Harrislee e.V., jetties broke and harbour infrastructure was destroyed.
A state of emergency was also declared on the east coast of Als: in the harbour, the outer pier, the jetties and the restaurant were destroyed and the nearby campsite was partially washed away.
The headland of the Schleim estuary no longer offered any protection, the pier head and trees were washed over and partly washed away. Around 20 boats sank in Maasholm harbour.
The breakwater of the Viking marina was flooded and the entire harbour was devastated. Out of 150 boats, only around ten were not affected.
Hard hit: Of the just over 100 yachts still in the harbour, around 35 were badly damaged. They sank or were thrown onto the shore.
In the Olympic harbour, the venue for Kiel Week, yachts broke free and drifted onto the Steinkaje. Dozens of boats sank in the harbour.
Up to 15 ships sunk, two jetties destroyed and others in need of repair. The sea rescuers had to rescue sailors from jetty 12 as the shore connection was missing.
In the marina, two boats ran aground, two washed up on the jetty, up to 15 total losses. Only a short distance away at the Klemens boatyard, however, no damage.
The small harbour on the east side of Falster was completely destroyed. The pier and jetties were swept away by the tide, and the water even broke up the tarmac on land.
There was swell in the harbour, the quay was flooded and the pavement sank. Lines broke, as did connections from floating houses to the land.
Two sailing yachts at depth, a motorboat stranded, a jetty destroyed. The small harbour has been badly hit and the ferry service has been interrupted for the time being.
Gusts of up to 58 knots and impressive breakers at the pier. Fortunately, there was no damage to boats, but there was damage to the promenade and electricity boxes.
