The water police received an emergency call at around 12.30 pm on Thursday. The caller reported that a boat had capsized. The incident took place on the Elbe in Dresden-Pieschen. According to a police spokeswoman, rescue measures were initiated immediately and the emergency services were dispatched between Elbe kilometres 58 and 59

While the rain pattered and the storm whistled across the Elbe, the two men, aged 28 and 36, presumably set off from the boat's mooring in Dresden-Neustadt. This is only a few hundred metres away from the scene of the accident where the boat capsized.

Fire service spokesman Pierre Steffen Bedrich explained: "The fire service was deployed with two boats, the police with one." The 28-year-old from Dresden held on to the boat after falling into the water. He was rescued from the water by the emergency services and taken to hospital. The other man disappeared into the water of the Elbe and could not be found.

Extensive search measures were then initiated and a police helicopter was also alerted. Despite using its thermal imaging camera, it was unable to locate the missing man.

The search had to be cancelled in the evening without the second sailor being found. Meanwhile, the capsized boat was secured by the emergency services. Unfortunately, the hope of the emergency services that the missing person had been able to save himself on the shore could not be confirmed.

Rescue operations were resumed this Friday morning - so far without success.
