Sailing Oscars: The nominees in the Luxury Cruiser categoryPhoto: YACHT
On the first Saturday of boot Düsseldorf, the coveted trophies of the European Yacht of the Year, the sailing Oscars of 2024, will be awarded during the Flagship Night. Four candidates have been nominated in the Luxury Cruiser category. Here are the details

The candidates in the other categories:

Arcona 50

Breed with class. Clear lines and structures. The new Arcona 50 is a real eye-catcher and performs well when tested under sail

The Swedish shipyard has already produced two award winners. Will it manage the triple with its latest performance cruiser? It was designed by the co-founder and decades-long designer of X-Yachts, Niels Jeppesen, which is clearly recognisable from the lines. The Arcona 50 is nevertheless up against established competitors - such as Swan, Grand Soleil and Solaris. Undoubtedly an exciting premiere! Hull length 14.99 m; beam 4.60 m; draught 2.95 m; weight 13.9 tonnes; sail area 142 m²; sail carrying capacity 5.0; base price 1,068,561 euros

Contest 50 CS

Luxury cruisers with centre cockpits have reliably won prizes in recent years: first the Hallberg-Rassy 50, last year the Oyster 495, and now Contest is launching another variant on the market with the 50 CS. The design comes from Judel/Vrolijk & Co from Bremerhaven, who are themselves among the series winners. Good prerequisites for a strong performance. Hull length 15.46 m; beam 4.90 m; draught 2.35 m; weight 22.9 tonnes; sail area on the wind 133 m²; sail carrying capacity 4.1; base price ex shipyard 1,663,620 euros.

Jeanneau Yachts 55

The striking canopy above the cockpit characterises the unusual design. And the position of the helm stations far forward

Unquestionably the most unconventional newcomer of the current model year! At boot Düsseldorf, Jeanneau presented the new 55, an owner's boat that offers as much privacy as otherwise only multihull yachts. This is because the aft guest compartments are each accessible via their own companionways. The cockpit is extremely sheltered at the front, while a huge open-air lounge stretches out aft, with an excellent view for steering and cranking in between. Hull length 16.15 m; beam 4.99 m; draught 2.45 m; weight 18.5 tonnes; sail area 122 m²; STZ 4.2; price 829,311 euros.

XC 47

From downwind, the otherwise towering hull appears dynamic. And this is also how the pioneer of the new XC series sails

In YACHT 19/2023, we document just how meticulously X-Yachts went about developing the new cruising series. The Danes built a one-to-one model from plywood that can even be tilted to the side to optimise ergonomics. Expectations are therefore high for the boat with its slightly raised superstructure and unique window shapes, not least in terms of sailing characteristics. Hull length 14.30; width 4.56 m; draught 2.30 m; weight 14.5 tonnes; sail area 123 m²; sail carrying capacity 4.6; base price 950,570 euros.
